In spoken Chinese, native speakers love quick, punchy rhetorical deflators. Two of the most common are 至于吗 (zhìyú ma) and 哪跟哪啊 (nǎ gēn nǎ a).
If you only rely on dictionary definitions, you miss their emotional velocity:
- 至于 (zhìyú): As for; to go so far as to.
- 哪 (nǎ): Where / which.
In living dialogue, however, they represent two of the most natural conversational shields in modern Mandarin.
1. 至于吗 (zhìyú ma): “Are You Seriously Overreacting That Much?”
Use “至于吗” when someone makes a catastrophic scene over a minor inconvenience.
🎬 Cinema Dialogue 1: Workplace Overreaction
Colleague A: 领导刚才看我那眼神不对劲,我感觉下周裁员名单肯定有我!
Colleague B: 他那是今天没戴隐形眼镜,看谁都眯着眼,至于吗你?
- Literal: The boss looked at me weirdly, I feel I’ll definitely be laid off! / He just wasn’t wearing his contact lenses, are you really going that far?
🎬 Cinema Dialogue 2: Relationship Drama
A: 他连情人节都没发朋友圈,我们分手吧!
B: 就为了个朋友圈闹分手,至于吗?
- Pragmatic Subtext: Disbelief at someone sacrificing a stable relationship over trivial social media validation.
2. 哪跟哪啊
2. 哪跟哪啊 (nǎ gēn nǎ a): “That Has Absolutely Nothing to Do With This!” (nǎ gēn nǎ a): “That Has Absolutely Nothing to Do With This!”
“哪跟哪啊” is spoken rapidly to reject an absurd comparison, an unfair accusation, or a complete non-sequitur.
🎬 Cinema Dialogue: Refuting Wild Accusations
Wife: 你今天回家晚了半小时,是不是在公司跟那个新来的实习生聊天?
Husband: 这都哪跟哪啊! 地铁二号线故障停运了半小时!
- Pragmatic Subtext: Total exasperation at a completely unfounded logical leap.
