“Just drop the last name and call me 'Big Brother'—let's be closer.”
In Chinese social interaction, forms of address play a strong role in defining interpersonal distance. Omitting the surname to simply say 'da ge' (elder brother) feels much closer and family-like compared to including the surname ('He da ge'), and is often used between close acquaintances or friends aiming to build closer rapport.
